Iona Baseball Drops Saturday Afternoon Contest at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, MD — The Iona University baseball team fell to Navy, 12-3 in the middle game of the weekend series at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium.  

GAME SUMMARY

Navy jumped out to an early lead, plating five runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Midshipmen added two more in the second on back-to-back one out RBI singles.
 
A two-out home run in the bottom of the third inning pushed the score 8-0 for the home team.
 
Freshman Carter Groen led off the top of the fifth with a single up the middle. A groundout advanced him to second before freshman JC Frias reached on a walk. Junior Carson Cahoy lined the 1-1 offering up the middle to drive in the first Iona run. Sophomore Anthony Zollo drove in the second run on an RBI fielder's choice.

Junior Jayson Gonzalez led off the top of the sixth inning with a double to right field. He would score on the next at bat as senior James Kemp singled through the right side to put the score at 8-3.

Navy put a dent in the Iona rally in the bottom half of the sixth inning with three runs on three hits to jump out in front, 11-3. The Midshipmen's final run came across on an RBI walk in the bottom of the eighth to bring the final to 12-3.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • The top three batters in the order had four of the seven hits for the Maroon & Gold.
  • Sophomore Josiah Ragsdale increased his hitting streak to eight straight games to start the season. He led the Gaels with two hits and has had four consecutive multi-hit games.
  • Cahoy, Kemp and Zollo all drove in runs for Iona.
  • Senior Cooper Haseley and redshirt-sophomore Tyler Lender both pitched a scoreless inning in relief on Saturday.

UP NEXT

The Gaels conclude the weekend series tomorrow afternoon with a 1 p.m. first pitch. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
