Iona Lacrosse Edges Out UNH For Third Straight Win

DURHAM, NH - The Iona women's lacrosse edged out University of New Hampshire by one goal,12-11 extending their winning streak to three games. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Sweeney was massive in today's win, playing all 60 minutes. She made 11 saves with her biggest save coming in the final seconds that gave the Maroon & Gold the win.

Iona's offense was led by Graduate Student Emily Stewat, she netted four goals on four shots and added one assist for a team high five points. Maliya Haddock was the only other Gael to record multiple goals. Alexa Maggiacomo, Arianna Burns, Micaela FitzPatrick, Kira Varada, Kacie Scarduzio, & Kate Krueger all found the back of the net as well. Iona only assisted on three goals and scored two free position goals. 

Varada and Krueger accounted for eight of the Iona 15 draw controls with four each. Stewart also added three extending her program record. As a team the Gaels picked up 12 ground balls with Varada setting a team high with four. The Montrose native also set a game high with four caused turnovers. 

The host team opened the scoring to start before the gaels scored two goals in a  span of 16 seconds to take the lead. The offense went cold for the rest of the first quarter and UNH was able to capitalize as they scored five more goals and took a 6-2 lead into the second. Iona came out blazing to start the second quarter, the Maroon & Gold scored six unanswered goals and took their largest lead of the game so far. The Wildcats closed out the second half with two goals in the final five minutes.   

Entering the second half how we started, knotted up, Iona went another run this time a 3-0 run giving the Gaels their largest lead of the day. UNH kept it a close game going into the fourth two goals at the end of the third. Both defenses were on their A game in the fourth with both teams scoring one goal each. UNH knotted things up in the first two minutes of the fourth before FitzPatrick netted the game winner with just over five minutes left in the game. Sweeney made five of her 11 saves in the fourth quarter.   

Iona will travel to Holy Cross on Tuesday March 5 for 1 pm start, game will be streamed on ESPN+.
