WORCESTER, MA - The Iona women's lacrosse team fell on the road to Holy Cross Tuesday afternoon,19-6. The Gaels winning streak of three games comes to an end as they fall to 3-2 on the season. Iona's offense was led by Laine Walterson & Emily Stewart with two goals each.

Micaela FitzPatrick each found the back of the net once. Gaels assisted on five of their six goals with
Lana Ranghelli leading the team with two. Iona was out shot 37-22 and we were able to get 14 of those 22 on net. As a team the Maroon & gold controlled 11 draws with junior
Kira Varada setting a team high with four.

Lauren Sweeney got the start for the Gaels, she made six saves and allowed 15 goals in 36 minutes of play. Freshman
Ava Giugliano finished the final 24 minutes, making four saves and allowing four goals. As a team the Gaels caused nine turnovers and nabbed 21 ground balls. Stewart led the team in both with five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Iona hung around with Holy Cross for the first fourteen minutes of the game, just as we were going to go into the second quarter the hosts rattled off four goals in the final minute and took a 8-4 lead. The Crusaders found the back of the net four more times in the second quarter all while keeping the Maroon & Gold off the board. Iona entered the half-time break down 12-4.
Holy Cross kept the Gaels off the board for the first 14 minutes of the third as well, extending the Gaels scoring drought to 32 minutes. Walterson scored the only two goals for the Gaels in the second half with Ranghelli assisting on both of them. As a team Iona went 0-7 on free position chances.
Iona will travel to sunny Florida for their next game on Saturday March 9, Gaels will take on Stetson for a noon start in DeLand, FL.
