New Rochelle, NY - As mother nature dumped rain drop on rain drop the Gaels battled through the elements and took down Mount St. Mary's 12-7 in the first conference game of the season. Iona improves to 6-2 on the season and 1-0 in MAAC play. Graduate Student Emily Stewart became the first Iona Gael to record 200 career draw controls.

Iona's offense was led by everyone as five different Gaels scored two goals each; Alexa Maggiacomo, Laine Walterson, Kira Varada Emily Stewart, and Micaela FitzPatrick. Sophomores Lindsey Grove and Arianna Burns netted one each. Maggiacomo & Varada also recorded one assist each as they both led the team with three points each.

As a team the Gaels took 40 shots with 27 being on net. They collected t=13 draw controls three more than the visitors and were 1-for-3 on free position shots. Stewart and Varada were the only Gaels to record multiple draw controls as they combined for eight of the 13.

Lauren Sweeney picked up win number six on the season playing all 60 minutes, the sophomore net minder made 14 saves on 26 shots faced. She also added a team & season high with six ground balls. Iona turned the ball over eight times and caused eight turnovers. Varada led the game with four caused turnovers, as she was the only player to have more than one.      

Iona will go on the road for the next game, Gaels will travel Fairfield as they battle the no. 24 ranked team in the country and five time defending MAAC Champs on Mar. 27.
