NEW ROCHELLE, NY — After 20 games on the road to start the season, the Iona University softball team its season debut at Donald E. Walsh Field, dropping a 5-0 decision to St. John's on Tuesday afternoon.
GAME SUMMARY
St. John's offense struck early, scoring the first run in the opening inning on a one-out double to left field. The Red Storm threatened with the bases loaded a few batters later, but senior
Alyssa DeJianne escaped trouble with a strikeout and pop up to end the frame.
Iona's lone hit of the game came in the bottom of the second on a leadoff single by senior
Jamie Sheeran.
The Red Storm added a run on a two-out single through the right side in the third inning. St. John's capped the scoring in the sixth inning with a one-out RBI double followed by a two-run home run to left field to bring the final to 5-0.
Iona was outhit 9-1 by St. John's on Tuesday afternoon. DeJianne fanned a season-high five batters in the start. Sophomore
Maddy Lowry pitched the final inning and two thirds, surrendering just one-hit and striking out two.

The Gaels continue the homestand on Friday, March 26 with a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader against Manhattan. Game one is slated for noon with game two to follow 30 minutes later and both contests will air on ESPN+.
