Iona Lacrosse Holds Off Siena For Win On Senior Day

FAIRFIELD, CT - Iona women's lacrosse program held off a fourth quarter surge from the Saints of Siena to earn their second conference win, 13-12. Iona improves to 7-3 and 2-1 in MAAC play. Prior to today's match the Lacrosse Program honored Iona's six seniors. This was the Maroon & Gold's first win over Siena since 2018 and first under Head Coach Lauren Kahn

Iona's offense was led by junior midfielder Kira Varada as she found the back of the net six times, while also notching her 100th career goal. Emily Stewart and Maylia Haddock recorded two goals each, while Micaela FitzPatrick, Kacie Scarduzio, and Calen Norton scored once. Norton's goal was her first goal of her collegiate career. FitzPatrick added to her team's high with five more assists.

As a team the Gaels took 35 shots with 21 being on net. They collected 13 draw controls with Kate Krueger setting a team high with five. Iona went 0-for-4 on free position chances while the visitors capitalized on their lone chance. Both teams went 17-for-17 on clear attempts.

Lauren Sweeney was a big part of the Gaels success today as she made multiple stops down the stretch to keep things just out of reach, including a save with :22 seconds left. The sophomore net minder faced 35 shots with 24 being on net, she made 12 saves and picked up her seventh win of the season. She also added two ground balls. As a team Iona collected 12 ground balls and caused seven turnovers. Defender Carly Linthicum was the lone Gael to record multiple caused turnovers and Stewart set a team high with three ground balls.

Iona will be back after the weekend for another home game on Wednesday, April 3rd. The Gaels will be taking on Rider for a 2 pm start.
