NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Battling through the rain and wind once again and just before the thunder and lightning hit the Iona campus the Gaels held off Rider, 14-11 for the Maroon & Gold's eighth win of the season and third MAAC win.
Iona's offense was led by graduate student
Emily Stewart recording four goals and one assist for a team high of five points. Senior
Micaela FitzPatricka and sophomore
Maliya Haddock each notched a hat trick.
Kate Krueger scored two goals which is a season high for her,
Alexa Maggiacomo and
Kira Varada each found the back of the net once.
As a team the Gaels took 31 shots with 21 being on net for the second straight game. They collected 15 draw controls with Stewart and Varada combining for 11. Freshman
Calen Norton set a season and career high with three draw controls. Iona did not take one shot on a free position chance in today's game.
Lauren Sweeney picked up her eight win of the season, The sophomore net minder faced 30 shots with 21 being on net, she made 10 saves, she also added three ground balls. Sweeney now leads the MAAC in saves and saves per game and is inside the top 30 in the country.
As a team Iona collected 21 ground balls. Varada set a team high with six ground balls and seven different Gaels in total collected more than one ground ball. Iona caused 12 Rider turnovers with Varada setting a game high with four.
Iona will make the annual trip to the Buffalo area, this year they will be battling Canisius, game is scheduled for an 11 am start.
