BUFFALO, NY - The Iona traveled to Western New York and took down Canisius 15-9. This is the best start to conference play in program history, and the Gael tie their highest season win total with their ninth win. Lauren Sweeney set a season high with 15 saves and picked up her ninth win of the season. She is now six wins away for most in school history.
Iona's offense was led by junior
Kira Varada as she found the back of the net five times,
Emily Stewart scored four times.
Micaela FitzPatrick and
Maliya Haddock added two goals each.
Alexa Maggiacomo and freshman
Calen Norton scored the Gaels other two goals.
As a team the Gaels took 35 shots with 24 being on net. Iona only assisted on four of the 15 goals. They collected 16 draw controls with Varada dominating the draws with a game high of seven. Varada became the second Gael to record 200 career draw controls. Gaels went 2-for-4 on free position shots with Canisiuis going 0-for-6.
The sophomore net minder faced just as many shots as the Iona offense took, she made a new career high 15 saves, she also added one ground ball. Sweeney's twelve career wins puts in a tie with Carlee Street for fourth most in program history; she is only five away from tying Colleen Magri for most wins.
As a team Iona collected 12 ground balls, Maggiacomo & FitzPatrick set a tema high with two each. Iona only caused five Canisius turnovers but the pressure was definitely still on as the Golden Griffs turnover it over 15 times.
Iona returns home this coming Wednesday Apr. 10 for a match-up against the Purple Eagles of Niagara. Game is scheduled for 1 pm and can be streamed on IonaInsider
