Iona Baseball Comes Up Short Saturday at Bryant

SMITHFIELD, RI — The Iona University baseball team looked for a late rally Saturday afternoon but came up short, falling to Bryant, 9-7 at Conaty Park.

Junior Jayson Gonzalez paced the Iona offense with three hits and a career-high seven runs batted in. Sophomore duo Anthony Zollo and Josiah Ragsdale both added two hits and two runs scored. Junior Anthony Febo also contributed two hits for the Gaels.

GAME SUMMARY

Bryant opened the scoring in the second inning, capitalizing on four hits and two Iona errors with the final blow being a two-out grand slam to bring the scoring to 7-0.

Iona looked to responded in the second getting two runners on with one out as junior Carson Cahoy reached on a fielder's choice and Zollo singled to right field. Both runners advanced on a flyout. Gonzalez then stepped to the plate and lined a two-run single up the middle to get the Gaels on the board.

The Bulldogs added to the scoring in the fourth with a two-out homer to center field for the 8-2 advantage.

Ragsdale picked up a two-out single to left field in the fifth inning for the Gaels. Gonzalez in the next at bat lifted a two-run home run over the left field fence to cut the deficit to four.

Bryant plated its final run in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double down the left field line.

The Gaels got another run across the dish in the seventh as Ragsdale picked up a one-out double and then advanced to third on a passed ball. He would score on an RBI groundout from Gonzalez.

Scoring would halt till Iona got its last chance at the plate in the ninth inning. Cahoy got things started with a one-out single to left field. Zollo followed that up with a single to right field. Both runners advanced into scoring position on a ground out to second base. Gonzalez scored the two runners on a two-run single to right field to cut the deficit to two, 9-7. Bryant escaped trouble with a strikeout to end the game.
