NEW YORK, NY — The Iona University softball team dropped a midweek non-conference tilt to Columbia 10-6, on Wednesday afternoon at Columbia Softball Stadium. The Gaels faced with an early deficit, scored runs in the final four innings of play looking for a late rally against the Lions.
Sophomore
Brooke Acker went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in the third inning, the first of her career. Senior
Emma Capuano also added two hits and a sixth inning home run. Senior
Jamie Sheeran also posted multiple hits.
GAME SUMMARY
Columbia came out swinging to start the game, utilizing a two-run shot and grand slam to score seven runs in the opening inning. The Lions plated three more runs in the second inning on a solo shot and two-run home run to take a 10-0 lead.
Iona was held to just one hit in the first three innings by Columbia as Sheeran recorded a two-out double in the first.
The Gaels got going offensively in the fourth inning as freshman
MJ Nicholson led off the frame with a single up the middle. Acker then launched a two-run shot over the left field wall to get Iona on the scoreboard.
Sophomore
Hailey Guerrero and Sheeran led off the fifth inning with back-to-back walks. After a strikeout, Acker earned a walk to load the bases for Iona. A throwing error to first by the Lions allowed Guerrero to score from third base. Columbia got out of the inning with the bases loaded by inducing a pop up to short and strikeout to end the inning.
Capuano continued the scoring for the Gaels in the sixth inning with a one-out home run to left field.
Iona faced with its final at bats in the seventh, started the inning with back-to-back singles by Acker and freshman
Leah Palmer. A wild pitch advanced both runners to scoring position. After a strikeout, freshman
Madison Campeau recorded an RBI single to second base. Senior
Kaylin Flukey extended the inning with a walk for the Gaels. Capuano then lined double through the right side. Columbia secured the final out on a grounder to third to secure the 10-6 final.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Sheeran registered her 12th multi hit game of the season for the Maroon & Gold.
- Capuano connected on her second home run of the season and the eighth of her career. She posted her fifth multi-hit game and third multi-RBI contest on the year.
- Acker has posted back-to-back multi-hit games for the Gaels and launched her first career home run. She has reached base safely in 13 straight games.
- Sophomore Dani Beckham logged a career-high five innings pitched in relief. She surrendered just one run on five hits.
