Iona Softball Shuts Out Marist in Game Two to Split Twin Bill

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — The Iona University softball team split its doubleheader against Marist on Saturday afternoon. The Red Foxes took game one 6-2 before the Gaels earned an extra innings 1-0 shutout in game two to halve the day at Gartland Field.

Senior Jamie Sheeran launched a two-run home run in game one for the Gaels. Sophomore Hailey Guerrero delivered the game winner on a two-out home run in the 10th inning of game two. Sophomore Maddy Lowry and senior Alyssa DeJianne combined for the shutout win.

GAME ONE: MARIST 6, IONA 2

Iona got going in the opening frame as senior Haywood earned a one-out walk to start. Sheeran then stepped to the plate and lined a home run to right center for the early lead.

Marist quickly answered back with a two-run shot of its own in the bottom of the first to tie things up.

The Red Foxes broke the tie ball game in the third on another two-run home run. Marist capped the scoring in the fourth on a two-out two-run single to bring the final to 6-2.

Iona was out hit 7-2 in game one, as the home run from Sheeran and a two-out single in the seventh by freshman MJ Nicholson were the team's lone two hits.

GAME TWO: IONA 1, MARIST 0 (10 inn.)

The second game was a pitcher's duel to start as Lowry held the Red Foxes to just four hits through the first four innings of work. Iona was held to just one hit in the opening four frames, a one-out single by sophomore Brooke Acker.

DeJianne entered the game in the bottom of the fifth and held the potent Red Foxes at bay for next two innings.

Marist threatened in the bottom of the seventh by loading the bases with two outs, the Gaels escaped the inning with a pop-up to short. The home team advanced the winning run to second in both the eighth and ninth innings, but Iona's defense held them off the scoreboard.

Guerrero broke the standstill in the 10th inning with a two-out solo shot over the left field wall for the 1-0 lead.

Looking for a late rally in the bottom of the inning, Marist opened the frame with a single up the middle before Iona recorded three straight outs to secure the 1-0 victory.
