Iona Lacrosse Sneaks Out Win Over Marist

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Despite not leading until under four minutes left in the 4th quarter the Iona Women's Lacrosse team edged out Marist, 13-11 to improve to 11-4, 6-2 in the MAAC, with one game left to play in the regular season. Emily Stewart and Kira Varada combined for more than half of the Iona goals. FitzPatrick joined the 30-30 club with 30 goals and 30 assists on the season. 

The rest of Iona's offense was led by Alexa Maggiacomo, Kate Krueger, Arianna Burns, Alexa Skoubas, Micaela FitzPatrick, and Kacie Scarduzio who scored the game sealing goal giving Iona two goal lead with 2:56 left to play. Iona assisted on seven goals with Varada, FitzPatrick and Scarduzio leading the way with two each.

As a team the Gaels took 35 shots with 28 being on net. They collected 13 draw controls with Varada dominating the draws with a game high of seven, two more than the next player. Gaels went 2-for-4 on free position shots with the Red foxes also going 50% at 1-for-2.

Lauren Sweeney allowed 11 goals on 36 shots faced, she made 11 saves and set a team high with three ground balls. The New Hampshire native is now top 10 in the country in saves and leads the MAAC in saves and saves per game. She is now third all-time in Iona's record book with 14 wins just three behind the record. 

As a team Iona collected 15 ground balls, caused only four Marist turnovers. Nine Different gaels recorded a ground ball in today's win, and five of them had multiple. Kira Varada ranks 12th in the country and 2nd in the MAAC with 2.29 caused turnovers per game.  

The Maroon & Gold will travel to the cross town rival of Manhattan Saturday for the Gaels final game of the regular season. Game is scheduled for a noon start.
