RIVERDALE, NY - Iona women's lacrosse program ended their 2024 regular season with their single season record seventh MAAC win. The Gaels defeated Manhattan 12-10 on the road at Gaelic Park.
Iona was led by junior
Kira Varada with three goals on four shots, all four shots were on goal. The reigning co-mid fielder of the year added five ground balls, three caused turnovers and three draw controls.
Alexa Maggiacomo &
Maliya Haddock added two goals each, while
Kacie Scarduzio,
Micaela FitzPatrick,
Kate Krueger,
Emily Stewart, and
Laine Walterson found the back net once.
As a team the Gaels took 32 shots with 21 being on net. They collected 9 draw controls with Manhattan having a game high 16. Gaels went 2-for-5 on free position shots with the Jaspers also going 4-for-7. Iona assisted on seven of the 12 goals, FitzPatrick set a tema high with four, her season total is now a team leading 36.
Lauren Sweeney allowed 10 goals on 31 shots faced, she made 12 saves and set a team and career high 10 ground balls, she is the third Gael in Iona history to record 10 or more ground balls in a single game.
As a team Iona collected 29 ground balls, their highest total this season. Nine Different gaels recorded a ground ball in today's win, and six of them had multiple. Kira Varada increased her caused turnovers per game with three more in today's win. Iona caused 11 Jasper turnovers.
Iona awaits from the Niagara vs Quinnipiac game tomorrow for official seeding, the 2024 MAAC Lacrosse Championships starts with the quarterfinals on April 28th.
