NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University softball team dropped a pair of games to Mount St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon. In the opener, the Gaels fell 4-2 before a 12-1 defeat to the Mountaineers in the second game at Donald E. Walsh Field.
GAME ONE: MOUNT 4, IONA 2
The Mountaineers opened the first game with a walk and sacrifice bunt before an RBI double brought in the first run.
The Gaels answered in the bottom of the first as senior
Kayla Haywood earned a four-pitch walk. Senior
Jamie Sheeran followed with a home run deep over the wall in right center for the 2-1 lead.
Iona looked to add to the lead in the fourth with junior
Brianna Bailey reaching on a fielder's choice and advancing to third on a two-out single by freshman
Madison Campeau. Mount escaped trouble with a flyout to end the inning.
The Mountaineers tied up the game on a leadoff home run in the top of the fifth. The inning continued with four more hits including a pair of RBI doubles to take a 4-2 advantage.
Iona got runners on the corners in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Mount once again evaded trouble with a fly out to end the frame. The Gaels were held to just one hit over the final two innings as Mount secured the game one win.
GAME TWO: MOUNT 12, IONA 1 (5 Inn.)
The Gaels started game two off strong as senior
Emma Capuano lined a double to the gap in right center in the bottom of the first. Haywood followed with an RBI single to center field for the 1-0 lead.
Mount punched back in the next half inning, utilizing four hits, four walks and a hit by pitch to score seven runs. The visitors added two more runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to take the run-rule win for the doubleheader sweep.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Sheeran's game one home run was her sixth of the season and 43rd of her career. She is one home run away from tying the program mark of 44 home runs set by Kristen Turner '17.
- Capuano double in game two was her 100th career hit as a member of the Maroon & Gold.
- Bailey also registered a hit in both contests for the Gaels.
UP NEXT
Tomorrow will be the final home game at Donald E. Walsh Field for the 2024 season. The Gaels will honor the graduating senior class in part of Senior Day, the ceremony will take place after the 1 p.m. start against the Mountaineers.
