NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University baseball team dropped its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series opener to Siena, 12-2 under the lights at City Park. The Saints outhit the Gaels 13-8 to take the opening contest on Thursday evening.
Senior
James Kemp tallied two doubles for the Maroon & Gold and drove in a run. Sophomore
Nickolas Mora also recorded two hits and sophomore
Anthony Zollo drove in a run for the Gaels.
GAME SUMMARY
Siena jumped out to an early lead in the first frame after a dropped foul ball with two outs extended the inning. Back-to-back walks followed before a two-run single gave the Saints the early advantage.
Iona looked to answer in the bottom half of the opening inning as junior
Jayson Gonzalez picked up a leadoff single through the right side. Sophomore
Josiah Ragsdale followed with a six-pitch walk. Freshman
Carter Groen reached on a bloop single as Siena got the first out at second as the Gaels threatened with runners at the corners. After a strikeout, Kemp stepped to the plate and lined an RBI double to the gap in right center to get Iona on the scoreboard.
The Saints answered in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly to right field to extend the lead back to two.
After a one-two-three third inning by both sides, Siena tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning on a passed ball and misplay in the outfield by the Gaels.
Iona looked to punch back in the fourth after loading the bases with two outs, but the Saints got a strikeout swinging to escape damage.
Momentum carried over for Siena as a leadoff home run extended the lead in the top of the fifth.
Graduate student
Jim Pasquale earned a two-out walk in the bottom of the fifth to get things going for the Gaels. Kemp followed with his second double of the evening, this time to left center to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Zollo then lined a comebacker up the middle that ricocheted off the pitcher and score Pasquale for the team's second run. Siena escaped further trouble with a diving grab down the first base line to end the inning.
Siena would extend its lead with two-runs in the sixth, eighth and ninth inning to bring the final score to 12-2.
