Iona WSOC and Wagner Draw on Thursday

STATEN ISLAND, NY— The Iona University women's soccer team played Wagner College to a scoreless draw on Thursday night at Hameline Field. It was a strong defensive battle between the Gaels and Seahawks with both teams getting late chances on goal denied, keeping the game scoreless.
 
Sophomore Savannah Rogers made one save in the first half and freshman Kayla Kalbaugh registered two saves in the second half for the second straight combined shutout for the Maroon & Gold. First-year forward Dolene Smith led the Gaels with a game-high two shot attempts on goal.

GAME SUMMARY

Iona pushed the tempo in the first 30 minutes under the lights on Staten Island, holding a 4-1 advantage on shots. Wagner goalkeeper made stops on shots from junior Zaheira Hegazi, sophomore Marissa Graziano and Smith to keep the Gaels off the scoreboard. Rogers made her lone save of the half in the 28th minute. It was a back-and-forth rest of the opening half with both teams firing off just one shot each that missed high over the net.
 
After Wagner held possession to start the second half of play, Iona had a breakaway opportunity as sophomore Kelsey Landers broke through the defense on a pass from Smith in the 48th minute. Landers fired the shot from eight yards out however Hughes cut the angle with the diving stop. Sophomore Lauren Sonski looked to tap in the rebound in front of the net, but Wagner blocked the follow up shot.
 
Wagner had two looks on goal in the second half, one coming in the 49th minute and one last attempt in the 84th near the right post that were denied by Kalbaugh. Iona made the final shot attempt of the game with just over three minutes remaining as Smith fired a shot through traffic that was stopped to keep the game scoreless.

TEAM STATS

  • Iona led in shot attempts for the third consecutive game with a 12-10 margin over the Seahawks, The Gaels fired a season-high six attempts on goal.
  • Wagner recorded six saves in goal while Iona made three saves.
  • The Seahawks held a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks with four of them coming in the second half.

The Gaels will host UMBC on Sunday, August 25 in a 3:00 p.m. contest at Mazzella Field.
