Iona WSOC Suffers 3-2 Setback at Le Moyne

SYRACUSE, NY— The Iona University women's soccer team held 2-1 advantage at halftime, but Le Moyne scored two unanswered goals in the second half to claim the 3-2 win at Ted Grant Field on Sunday afternoon.

In a back-and-forth opening half, sophomore Marissa Graziano got the scoring started on a penalty kick goal in sixth minute. After Le Moyne knotted things up in the 14th minute, junior Krystal Haertter gave the Maroon & Gold the 2-1 advantage in the 41st minute. Both Graziano and Haertter tallied their first career goals in the first half for the Gaels. Sophomore Lauren Sonski and freshman Aiyanna Robles Sedano recorded their first career point with the assists on the second Iona goal.

GAME SUMMARY

Iona was in control early looking to break open the scoring off the opening whistle. A breakaway chance for the Gaels happened in the 5th minute as sophomore Kelsey Landers got past the Le Moyne defense. Her shot from 8-yards out was denied by the charging Dolphins goalkeeper Simone Schwarz-Eise.

The Gaels then drew a corner kick in the following minute, the shot attempt off the cross in the box hit an outstretched arm of a Le Moyne defender to draw a penalty kick call from the referee. Graziano stepped up to the line and buried the penalty in the lower right corner past the diving Schwarz-Eise for the 1-0 Iona lead.

Le Moyne didn't back down, working its way into the Iona end in the following minutes. A breakout occurred in the 14th minute for the home team as a cross got sent into the box. The first header attempt went way up in the air in front of the goal, setting up Lindsey Leblanc for the rebound header just past the reach of sophomore Savannah Rogers to tie the game at 1-1.

The Gaels finally broke the tie in the 41st minute as Robles Sedano pushed the ball out right to Sonski driving toward the end line. Sonski fired a cross into the box to Haertter in stride for the chip-in the shot to the back left corner of the net for the 2-1 lead.

Out of the intermission, Iona looked in control of the game tempo, out-shooting Le Moyne 4-0 over the first 17 minutes of play. The Dolphins had a chance at the doorstep in the 64th minute but Rogers made the save on the point-blank. Rogers recorded another big save in the 71st minute as a chance off the free kick entered the box but was able to turn the shot aside.

A through ball at midfield for Le Moyne in the 75th minute allowed a breakaway chance for Danielle Casey past the Iona back line. She took two dribbles fired the left footed shot into the back of the net to tie the game up at 2-2. Momentum continued in the 86th minute for the Dolphins as a cross into the box by Mallory Pietrzak found Casey all alone to bury the shot from four yards out for the 3-2 Dolphins lead.

Iona pressed for the equalizer in the final minutes but were turned aside by the Le Moyne defense as the home team earned the non-conference win.
