Iona WSOC Drops MAAC Opener at Siena

LOUDONVILLE, NY— The Iona University women's soccer team fell to Siena, 6-0 in the first Metro Atlantic Athletic conference match of the season on Saturday afternoon. The Saints broke the scoring late in the first half with two goals in the final 10 minutes before a four-goal second half amid rainy conditions at Hickey field to take the conference opener.

GAME SUMMARY

It was a defensive battle in the opening half with both teams held to just two shots each over the first 30 minutes of play. Both teams fired two shots during that span. Iona had chances in the 12th minute as rookie Gianna Peracchio fired a shot on goal that was stopped by Cate Burns. Sophomore Camille Daniel missed just high on a rifled shot from 20-yards out in the 28th minute.

Siena broke through on the iona pressing attack in the 36th minute on a cross into the box that got deflected right to Megan Stowell for the 1-0 lead. The Saints tacked on the second goal of the half with 28 seconds remaining as Catherine Rogers connected on the long cross into the back of the net.

The second half was dominated by the Saints with a 17-3 shot margin as the rain began to fall. Siena recorded four goals in the final 45 minutes to take the game 6-0.
