Iona VB Earns First Win of 2024 with Three-Set Sweep of Hampton

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The Iona University volleyball team earned a three-set victory over Hampton to complete action at the 2024 Henson Hawk Invitational hosted by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Senior Kenzie Wiggins posted 13 kills and rookie Mija Jegers added 10 to lead the Maroon & Gold to its first win of the 2024 campaign.

THE RUNDOWN

The Gaels ran through the Pirates in straight sets 25-15, 25-23 and 27-25.

Iona never trailed in the first set, opening the frame with six of the first seven points. Hampton never got closer than two points. A 7-1 run following a 15-13 advantage was all the Maroon & Gold needed in the opening set win.

Iona trailed 1-0 and 2-1 and took the lead for good on a sophomore Sanem Bas service ace in set two. After getting to set point at 24-17, the Gaels withstood a six-point charge from the Pirates and held on to the two-point set win.

The third set proved to be the closest of the three with 17 tie scores and seven lead changes. Hampton had two chances at set point but three straight kills  by Wiggins, senior setter Emma Vu and graduate Jen Soto secured the match for Iona.
