JAMAICA, NY - The Iona University volleyball team split a pair of three-set decisions on the first day of the 2024 Red Storm Invitational at Carnesecca Arena. The Gaels fell to host St. John's in the opener and swept Bryant in the nightcap.
MATCH ONE: ST. JOHN'S 3, IONA 0
The Red Storm took the first match in straight sets 25-11, 25-8 and 25-20.
IONA PERFORMERS
- Rookie Kari Smith led the Gaels with five kills while adding an assisted block for 5.5 points.
- Freshmen Mija Jegers and Taylor Timko each had four kills and five points. Jegers added an ace while Timko had two blocks.
- Graduate Grace Ehler also pitched in four kills.
- Freshman setter Jaylyn Simon had 12 assists.
- Sophomore libero Ava DeGuzman led with six digs.
THE OPPONENT
- St. John's was led by a trio of performers with 10+ kills. Erin Jones had 14, Lucrezia Lodi posted 12 and Giorgia Walther added 11.
- Setter Wiktoria Kowalczyk posted 37 assists.
- Libero Rashanny Solano recorded 21 digs.
MATCH TWO: IONA 3, BRYANT 0
After taking the first set 25-20, the Gaels outlasted Bryant 27-25 and 25-23 in the final two to earn the sweep. In the middle frame, the Gaels erased an eight-point, 17-9 deficit, scoring eight of the final 10 to earn the win. The third set featured 13 tie scores and nine lead changes.
IONA PERFORMERS
- Senior Kenzie Wiggins rebounded in the nightcap with a 14-kill, 10-dig double double. She added an ace and two blocks for a match-best 16 points.
- Jegers posted eight kills and hit .500 while also posting an ace.
- Ehler recorded seven kills with three blocks.
- Senior Jen Soto led with four blocks in the win.
- Simon was a dig shy of a double double with 32 assists and nine digs.
- DeGuzman had a match-best 24 digs.
THE OPPONENT
- Arianna Ugolini led the Bulldogs with nine kills and nine digs.
- Setters Melis Isik and Carolina Camacho combined for 23 assists.
- Libero Carrina Barron posted 17 digs.
