NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University women's basketball team got back in the win column on Thursday morning, defeating Rider, 84-53 on Kids Day at the Hynes Athletic Center. The Maroon & Gold set a new season single-game high for points scored and made three-pointers, finishing the game with 12 triples.
Iona had nine different scorers in the victory over the Broncs and had four scorers post double figures. Seniors
Ella Fajardo and
Judith Gomez along with sophomore
Zoey Ward all registered 14 points. Senior
Erin Leary chipped in 13 points for the Gaels.
THE RUNDOWN
The Broncs came out of the gate strong with the first two baskets of the game before Ward jump started the Iona offense with a triple and driving layup. It was back and forth from there with both teams knotted up at nine with 4:09 remaining in the frame. Iona took its first lead with a 4-0 run on baskets from Fajardo and rookie
Destinee Salgado. A 6-2 swing in favor of Rider knotted the game up once more before a pair of free throws from Ward gave the Gaels a 17-15 lead at quarters end.
Iona continued to hold the slight lead to start the second stanza before pulling ahead thanks to an 8-3 on a layup by Gomez and two threes from Fajardo and Leary to take a 28-21 lead with 5:59 to go. The Gaels would hold the Broncs at bay in the final five minutes of the frame, outscoring the visitors 14-7 to take a 40-32 lead into halftime. Iona shot 52.9% from the field and was a perfect 5-for-5 from downtown.
The Gaels continued to pull ahead in the third quarter with a 22-12 scoring margin in the third quarter. Six Gaels chipped in points in the third frame led by eight points from Leary. Iona held the opposition to just five field goals in the quarter.
Iona continued to dominate the second half with a 20-11 scoring margin in the final frame, shooting 53.8% as a team. Rookie
Adrianna Gonzalez paced the Maroon & Gold with nine points in the fourth quarter and fellow first-year
Chloe Vasquez added four points. Iona picked up its largest win of the year, outscoring the opposition by 31 points in the 84-53 victory.
IONA PERFORMERS
- Ward posted 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting and a 4-of-4 day at the foul line. She added five rebounds and a pair of assists.
- Fajardo was 5-of-9 from the field for 14 points to go with five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
- Gomez connected on a team-high six field goals on the way to 14 points. She finished just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds and dished out four assists and had a pair of steals.
- Leary was 4-of-5 shooting with a team-high three made three-pointers to go with five rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocked shots.
- Salgado grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds and finished with eight points.
THE OPPONENT
- Gabby Turco led Rider with 13 points to go with two rebounds and two assists.
- Kaylan Deveney chipped in nine points on 4-of-5 shooting for the game.
- Six different Broncs recorded a team-high three rebounds.
TEAM STATS
- Iona registered it second highest shooting percentage of the season with a 48.4% mark on Thursday while Rider shot 40.8% from the field.
- The Gaels connected on a season best 12 three-pointers on a 54.5% clip from downtown and held Rider to just three triples.
- Iona won the rebounding battle with a 41-23 margin on the glass.
- The Gaels assisted on 20 of the 30 team field goals for the game.
- Iona scored 30 points off 16 Rider turnovers and the Broncs had 14 points on 15 Iona turnovers.
