Iona MBB Falls at Manhattan

RIVERDALE, NY - Manhattan used a double-digit run in the opening 20 minutes in a 76-55 win over the Iona University men's basketball team in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Draddy Gym. Senior Dejour Reaves had 12 points and junior Yaphet Moundi added 11 in the loss.

THE RUNDOWN

Iona never led in the game. Following the third and final tie score of the contest at 10-10, Manhattan scored seven straight to open a 17-10 advantage with 11:34 to play. Junior Luke Jungers corner three just over a minute later cut it to 19-14. The Jaspers answered with a decisive 14-0 run and held the Gaels scoreless for just over five minutes. The home team led by 18 at halftime.
 
Manhattan led by as many as 25 points in the second half. The Gaels used a 19-7 run to cut it to 61-48 with 8:21 remaining but it was as close as they would get. The Jaspers answered with 10 of the next 13 points to seal the win.

IONA PERFORMERS

  • Reaves' 12 points came with four rebounds, two assists and a steal.
  • Moundi scored all 11 of his points in the second half, shooting 5-for-5 from the field and 1-for-2 from the line.
  • Senior Clarence Rupert and junior Kernan Bundy led with five rebounds apiece. Bundy also had a team-high three assists and two steals.

THE OPPONENT

  • Manhattan rookie Will Sydnor led three double-digit scorers with a game-high 21 points. He added six boards.
  • Masiah Gilyard posted 16 points and seven boards.
  • Devin Dinkins posted 11 points Jaden Winston posted a team-high eight assists.

TEAM STATS

  • Manhattan out shot Iona 50.8%-35.5%.
  • The home team also held a 39-34 overall rebounding edge and 19-13 on second chance points despite the Gaels grabbing two more offensive boards.
  • Manhattan posted 17 assists and 12 turnovers while Iona had 16 assists and 13 turnovers, just two in the second half.
