Iona MSOC Earns 5-3 Comeback Win Over Saint Peter’s

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University men's soccer team was faced with a one-goal deficit after the opening half and rallied to beat Saint Peter's 5-3 on Wednesday afternoon. The Gaels used second half tallies from junior Calle Sjoberg and two goals from graduate student Aitor Jorde to take the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tilt over the Peacocks.

It was a season-high in goals scored for the Maroon & Gold with four different scorers contributing. A total team effort saw 16 points registered on the day. Jorde led the way with his first two goals as a Gael. Sjoberg scored his second of the season along with sophomore Alvaro Maneiro and rookie Andrey Mora Bravo who netted first half goals.

Both Maneiro and Sjoberg also tallied assists for the multi-point effort. Junior Jaime Roman Jr. dished out his first two assists of the season. Sophomore Fernando Alves Schmelz made two big second half saves for the win in goal.

GAME SUMMARY

Iona was working the ball in the attacking third consistently to start the contest. The Gaels broke the scoring open in the 15th minute as Sjoberg sent the ball down the left side for graduate student Chris Morandi who then dribbled into the box and fired a cross. Mora Bravo was there to chip the ball towards the left post and into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

The Gaels wasted little time getting the ball back off the restart as Roman Jr. delivered a long pass to a charging Maneiro to dribble past the defense and rope a laser to the back left corner for the 2-0 advantage just 36 seconds later.

Saint Peter's offense woke up and countered just 27 seconds later as Connall McElrain finished off a breakaway goal past the diving reach of rookie Josh Bells.

Momentum continued in the Peacocks favor as the opening half winded down. The visitors knotted the game up 2-2 on a goal by Micah O'Garro in the 26th minute. Saint Peter's took the lead with 42 seconds left in the first half as O'Garro buried his second tally of the contest.

Iona showed urgency out of the halftime break, pushing the tempo in the attacking third once again. A hard foul in the box by the Peacocks in the 56th minute set up a penalty kick chance for Sjoberg. He delivered a crisp shot to the lower left corner of the goal to tie the game at 3-3.

The Gaels continued to set the pace as the half continued and broke through once again in the 72nd minute as Maneiro weaved through traffic and found Jorde at the doorstep to bury the one-timer for the 4-3 advantage.
Iona capped the scoring in the 79th minute as Roman picked up a steal in the Peacocks end and sent the ball out to rookie Enbiya Bolur in the middle. Bolur took two dribbles and delivered a lead pass to Jorde who one-timed the right footage shot towards the left post and in to bring the final score to 5-3.
