Iona MSOC Downs Rider, 3-0

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ — The Iona University men's soccer team got back in the win column on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over Rider at Ben Cohen Field. The Gaels raced out to a first half advantage before standout second half defensively to best the Broncs in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action.

Three goal scorers found the back of the net for the Maroon & Gold. Sophomore duo Emilio Rossi and John Oualaalou tallied their first collegiate goals in the win. Junior Florian Schutt netted his second goal of the season. Schutt along with sophomore Alvaro Maneiro and rookie Andrey Mora Bravo all registered an assist. In goal, sophomore Fernando Alves Schmelz recorded his second straight shutout with four saves on the day.

GAME SUMMARY

Rider looked to pounce first on its home field, testing Iona's back line and Schmelz early with shots on goal in the third and eighth minute of action. Schmelz was there to answer with his two saves of the opening stanza.

Iona's offense methodical offense was slow to start, not firing a shot till the 17th minute of play. The Gaels started to roll from there earning the team's third corner of the first half in the 25th minute. A cross in by junior Calle Sjoberg on the left side connected with Schutt who whipped a header towards the right post. Marius Helias made a quick save, but the rebound launched six yards back. Rossi on the trail fired a one-timer to the back left corner for the 1-0 lead.

The Gaels continued to stay on the attack drawing another corner this time from the right side just 12 minutes later. Maneiro stepped back and launched a perfect cross in. Schutt was able to get a piece of the ball with another header to the back left corner for the 2-0 Iona lead.

Rider looked to answer in the second half with a shot in the 58th minute ricocheting off the left post. Schmelz then made a stop on a shot attempt in the 68th minute.

The Broncs then drew an opportunity just outside the 18-yard box on an Iona foul. The curling shot towards the far post by Lovro Kostanjsek was read perfectly by Schmelz who made a diving punch out save to hold the opposition.

Iona capped the scoring in the 81st minute as Mora Bravo sent a lead pass out left to Oualaalou eight yards out. Oualaalou made one dribble and fired the right footed shot towards the near post and into the back of the net for the 3-0 advantage.
