Iona WSOC Wins Second Straight, Shuts Out Niagara 1-0 on Senior Day

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University women's soccer team earned its second consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory on Saturday afternoon, shutting out Niagara 1-0 on Senior Day. Rookie Mya Jackson netted the game winning goal in the first half for the Gaels, who then used lock down defense to preserve the win over the Purple Eagles at Mazzella Field.

Prior to kickoff, the Maroon & Gold honored its six students in the Class of 2026. Seniors Mia DiPronio, Krystal Haertter, Zaheira Hegazi, Kendall Infantino, Clara Laudato, and Victoria Righetti were all recognized and started the contest for Iona.

Jackson tallied her second goal of the season in the 41st minute. Sophomore Dolene Smith recorded her third assist of the season and rookie Ava Barker picked up her first collegiate point with an assist on the goal. Laudato and sophomore Kayla Kalbaugh combined for the shut out in goal for Iona.

TEAM STATS

It was an even contest through the opening 30 minutes of action as both sides tallied two shot attempts. Iona got rolling in the 38th minute as Jackson fired a close range shot attempt but was stopped by Niagara goalkeeper Julia Poissant. The Gaels kept the pressure on the Purple Eagles in the 41st minute leading to a breakaway attempt.

Barker got the ball and made a spin move around the Niagara defender and dished a lead pass out front to Smith. After two long dribbles down the left side, Smith fired a sweeping cross from the left side towards the right post. Jackson was there to bury the chip shot past the diving Poissant to give Iona the 1-0 lead.

Out of the intermission, Niagara looked to net the equalizer early. A long range shot in the 52nd minute by Morgan Kulniszewski was denied by Kalbaugh, her lone save of the game. From there Iona controlled the tempo limiting chances. The Gaels held the Purple Eagles to zero shot attempts the final 22 minutes while the visitors threatened with two corner kick attempts. From there Iona utilized poise and determination to earn the 1-0 victory and cap a 2-0 week of league play.
