NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University women's soccer team battled Rider to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday afternoon at Mazzella Field. The Gaels took an early lead on two goals from rookie
Ava Barker before the Broncs rallied to tie the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matchup.
Barker netted her first collegiate goal just 39 seconds into the matchup. She followed that up just 13 minutes later for her first career brace. Sophomore
Kayla Kalbaugh made three saves in goal for the Maroon & Gold.
GAME SUMMARY
Iona struck first in the opening minute on a heads up play from Barker after Rider received the opening kick-off. The rookie made a charge in on a backwards pass to Broncs goalkeeper Ashley Moore. Barker's shoulder got a piece of the ball on the attempted clear and ricocheted into the back of the net for the 1-0 Iona advantage just 39 seconds into the game.
The Gaels continued to press in the attacking third from there. A long corner on the right side bounced just outside the 18-yard box. Barker was there to collect it and dribble past the Broncs' backline to earn a look on goal. She fired a right footed shot from 16-yards out towards the left post past the reach of Moore for the 2-0 lead in the 14
th minute of play.
Iona fired two more chances over the next 12 minutes with another look on goal from senior
Krystal Haertter bounced off the left post in the 22
nd minute.
Rider finally generated momentum in the 28
th minute and drew a foul just outside the 18-yard box. That set up a rifle of a shot by Bethie Morgan to the upper 90 on the left side to get on the scoreboard. The Broncs looked to net the equalizer in the final seconds of the first half, but Kalbaugh was there for the save.
Momentum stayed with the visitors out of the halftime break, drawing a corner kick just three minutes into the restart. Iona got a piece of the corner but the clear attempt bounced right to Noa Menzing who found Lauren Black wide open at the doorstep to fire the chip shot and knot the score up at 2-2.
Kalbaugh kept the game tied with back-to-back saves in the 64
th and 65
th minute for Iona. The Gaels pressed the final 25 minutes, out shooting Rider 5-0 but were unable to find the back of the net one final time as the game went to a draw with both teams earning a point in the league standings.
TEAM STATS
- Iona registered 15 shot attempts while Rider made eight for the game. The Broncs held a slight 5-3 edge for shots on goal.
- The Gaels attempted double-digit corners for the fourth time this season with 11 on the day. Rider was held to just three corner kick attempts.
- 20 fouls were called for the game, and one yellow was handed out to the Broncs.
