NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Following an explosive performance in his first game with the Iona University men's basketball, graduate guard
CJ Anthony was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Player of the Week. Anthony played a pivotal role in Iona's season-opening 81-73 victory over metropolitan rival Hofstra on Friday night at the Hynes Center.
Â
Anthony posted a career-high 24 points in the win, doing so with exceptional efficiency. The Cincinnati transfer shot 5-for-6 from the field and buried four three-pointers, while adding five assists and four rebounds. His poise at the free throw line proved just as valuable, converting 10-of-13 attempts.
Â
After helping Iona set the tone early in the contest, Anthony took over in the final 20 minutes. He scored 15 of his 24 points in the second half and delivered timely plays that allowed the Gaels to maintain control throughout the night. The performance played a key role in securing the first victory of the
Dan Geriot era.
Â
The win marked the official start of the
Dan Geriot era, and Anthony's leadership and standout debut were critical in propelling Iona to a strong first impression to open the 2024-25 campaign.
Â
Anthony and the Gaels turn their attention to the road as they travel to take on UMKC on Tuesday in a Veterans Day matchup at noon.
