NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona women's lacrosse welcomed Holy Cross to Mazzella for the season opener earlier this afternoon, Holy Cross jumped out to a quick lead and did not look back as they top the Gaels 18-5. Grove led the Maroon & Gold with two goals.
Iona's offense came off the sticks of Grove with two, Varada and Norton with one each and freshman
Haley Lauer netting her first career goal. Gaels assisted on four of the five goals with sophomore
Natasha Newport leading the way with two.
Both
Lauren Sweeney and
Ava Giugliano both found time in net for Iona, Sweeney played the first 30 mins, making five saves, allowing 13 goals along with four ground balls. Giugliano played the entire second half allowing five goals, making zero saves and added two ground balls.
As team the Gaels collected seven draw controls to Holy Cross's 19, picked up 14 ground balls, and caused eight turnovers with
Victoria Curreri and
Amelia Kelley with two each. Gaels went 0-3 on free position opportunities as the opposition went 2-4.
Gaels are back in action next Saturday on the 22nd as they host Boston for a 2 pm start. Note time may change based on the conclusion of our Men's Lacrosse game.
