NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona women's lacrosse program hosted Boston University this afternoon in a doubleheader with the men on Mazzella Field. The Gaels fell to the Terriers 14-5. The visitors used a strong start to the second half as they held Iona scoreless until eight minutes left in the final quarter.
Boston University opened the scoring on its first possession, but
Laine Walterson responded shortly after to put the Gaels on the board. The Terriers then went on a five-goal run to close out the first quarter. Junior
Maliya Haddock opened the second quarter for Iona, cutting the deficit to four—the closest the Gaels would get for the remainder of the game. BU added two more goals past junior
Lauren Sweeney before Haddock tallied her second of the game to close out the half.
The Terriers struck three times in the third quarter and added three more in the fourth before Iona's seniors,
Kate Krueger and
Kira Varada, netted the final two goals of the game.
Lindsey Grove assisted on both fourth quarter goals. Following the media timeout,
Ava Giugliano replaced Sweeney in net for the final eight minutes, making three saves and keeping BU off the board. Sweeney finished with five saves in 52 minutes of play.
Varada led the team with five ground balls and six caused turnovers, while senior
Carly Linthicum was the only other Gael to force multiple turnovers. Both teams recorded 21 ground balls, but the Terriers held an 11-draw control advantage over Iona.
The Gaels fall to 0-2 on the season and will travel to Rider on February 26 for a non-MAAC matchup against the Broncs.
