Iona MLAX Drops Away Tilt at LIU

BROOKVILLE, NY – The Iona University men's lacrosse team traveled to Brookville, New York at noon on Saturday to face off with Long Island University. The Gaels held a narrow 8-7 lead into halftime, but 4 unanswered 3rd quarter goals would swing the momentum in the favor of the hosts and the Maroon & Gold would drop the game, 14-9. Five Gaels finished with two or more points. 

THE Rundown

The two sides both put three in the back of the net in the first stanza, with Vincent Pittito, Jimmy Kennedy, and Matthew Dyszkiewicz scoring for the Maroon & Gold. The final Gaels goal in the first quarter from Dyszkiewicz was his career-first.  

The second quarter saw the Gaels tie their season high in points in a quarter with five. Cooper Metz was among the scorers for Iona, his career first contribution for the Maroon & Gold. 

Out of the locker room the Sharks pulled away with four goals in the third stanza. LIU continued their momentum to extend their run to 7-0 through the final moments in the fourth quarter, before Francesco Raso grabbed his career-first goal in Maroon & Gold in the final minute finishing the game with a 14-9 scoreline in favor of LIU.  

IONA PERFORMERS

  • Vincent Pititto finished with three points off a two-assist, one-goal afternoon. The Commack, New York native registered his career first and second assists and scooped up a pair of ground balls.  
  • Cullen Lawry netted another two goals, finishing with 3 points with his one assist. The Reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week led all players on the field with 11 shots and seven shots on goal. 
  • Jake Riglietti counted his second three-point game of the season with two assists and one goal.  
  • Francesco Raso rifled home his career-first goal for the Gaels and dished out one assist.  
  • Vincenzo Gramaglia led Iona with five ground balls, winning 10 of 24 face-offs.  
  • Matthew Dyszkiewicz finished with 2 points off a one goal, one assist outing. Both the goal and assist were Dyszkiewicz's career first.  
  • Captain Jimmy Kennedy and Cooper Metz also found the back of the net, with the latter recording his career-first.  

THE OPPONENT

  • Mark Regen and Aidan Zuhski tallied four goals apiece.  
  • Khairi Sears joined his teammates with a four-point outing, tallying three assists and one goal.  

Up Next

The Gaels complete their three game road trip and return home to take on Virginia Military Institute from Mazzella Field at 11:00 am on Saturday
