Iona Baseball Erupts for 18 in Win Over Coppin State

HANOVER, MD — The Iona University Baseball Team picked up their first win of the 2025 Season with an 18-2 win over Coppin State. The game was called after seven innings as both the Gaels pitching and hitting excelled. Graduate student Jayson Gonzalez continued his strong start to the year with a three hit game, while three more Gaels had multi-hit showings.

The Gaels continued their early inning success with a seven run second innings before they would pull away in the fifth adding on eight more runs. Senior Eric Gialloreto picked up his first win of the year as he ties the all-time appearances by an Iona pitcher.

Game SUMMARY

After a scoreless first inning, the Gaels' offense came alive with a seven-run explosion on four hits in the second. Junior Anthony Zollo ignited the rally with a leadoff hit-by-pitch, followed by an RBI triple down the right-field line. He then crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Coppin State hit another batter and issued a walk to load the bases, setting the stage for Iona to capitalize. Sophomore Sean Stephenson delivered a two-run single, while a perfectly executed bunt by Gonzalez added another run. Graduate student James Kemp capped off the inning with a two-run double down the right-field line.

The Eagles responded with a run in the bottom of the second on consecutive doubles, but the Gaels quickly answered. Senior Matt Wessels extended the lead to 8-1 with an RBI single in the third.

Iona struck again in the fifth, erupting for eight more runs on just two hits. The Gaels worked eight walks in the frame, with RBIs coming from Stephenson, Zollo, and junior Damian Rodriguez. Freshman Justin Trinidad made his debut on the mound, tossing two strong innings and racking up four strikeouts.

The Maroon & Gold continued their offensive surge in the sixth, as Zollo's double drove in two more runs to push the score to 18-2.

Senior Ronald Rockey took the mound in the seventh inning for his first appearance with the Gaels, closing out the game in dominant fashion with three strikeouts.

Gialloreto earned the win for Iona, while Jeremiah Eneix took the loss for Coppin State.
