Reaves Overtime Buzzer Beater Leads Iona MBB to Win at Mount St. Mary's

EMMITTSBURG, MD - Iona University men's basketball senior Dejour Reaves hit a game winning three-pointer as time expired in a thrilling 70-67 overtime win over Mount St. Mary's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Knott Arena. 'Junior Yaphet Moundi corralled a key offensive board and kicked it out to classmate Luke Jungers. 'Jungers handed it off to Reaves who let one fly from the wing and found nothing but net to send the Gaels home with the victory in the extra period. 'It was Iona's first buzzer beater win in 27 years.

THE SHOT

THE RUNDOWN

The Gaels held a 12-point lead midway through the first half, scoring 10 straight points to build the margin. 'Jungers three ball made the score 19-7 with 10:29 to play. 'Following a Jungers layup on a nifty feed from rookie Justin Menard at 7:27, Iona led 23-12. 'Mount St. Mary's chipped away and got to within four with a 7-0 run over a four minute span. 'Jungers ended the drought with another three ball. 'The Mountaineers closed within two points in the final 70 seconds, but Reaves circus layup on the Gaels' last possession made it a 30-26 margin the break.

Iona never trailed in the second half, but could not take more than a two possession lead through out. 'Reaves steal and breakaway layup put Iona ahead 59-54 with 4:14 to play. Mount Saint Mary's took advantage of an offensive drought by the Gaels and tied the game at the foul line with 1:31 left capping a 5-0 run. 'Rookie Adam Njie Jr. broke through the defense the Gaels' next possession to put Iona ahead by two on a layup with 1:13 on the clock. 'The Mount quickly tied it at 61-61 with just under a minute to play. 'After an Iona turnover and stop on the defensive end, Iona could not convert on a game ender in regulation, sending the game to overtime.

Mount St. Mary's took its first lead since early in the first half just over a minute into the extra frame. 'The two teams traded buckets or defensive stops as the score was tied three times over the next three plus minutes. 'Down two, Njie found Moundi for a game tying layup with 1:04 to play. 'Iona forced a tough three pointer by Mount and got the defensive board to set up the exciting final possession. Njie's go-ahead attempt from the elbow fell off the left side of the rim and was grabbed by Moundi with under five seconds left. 'Moundi kicked it out to Jungers who shot faked and handed the ball to Reaves for the game winner.

Iona's last buzzer-beater came on January 13, 1998 when senior Mount Vernon native John McDonald's shot from the top of the key sent the Gaels' home with a 75-72 win over Manhattan at the Hynes Center, then named the Mulcahy Center.  A span of 863 games. Read more on NYTimes.com.
