Iona WBB Drops Saturday Tilt to Marist

NEW ROCHELLE, NY —The Iona University women's basketball team fell to Marist, 63-43 on Saturday afternoon. The Red Foxes led wire-to-wire at the Hynes Athletic Center to split the season series with the Gaels.
 
Senior Talia DePetrillo led the Maroon & Gold with 12 points and two assists along with two steals. She also registered a career-high six rebounds on the day. Senior Ella Fajardo finished with nine points for Iona and senior Erin Leary grabbed a team-high seven boards.

THE RUNDOWN

Marist jumped out to an early 8-0 margin in the opening quarter while Iona struggled offensively. The Gaels were held without a field goal for the eight minutes of play until junior Amaya B. Evans hit a turnaround jumper in the lane. The Red Foxes closed the quarter with back-to-back triples to take a 14-2 lead after the first frame.
 
After an opening basket from Marist to start the second quarter. Fajardo then connected on a triple before a four-minute score drought from both sides. A spot up triple from sophomore Zoey Ward followed to cut the deficit to 16-8 with 5:25 left to go. The Red Foxes countered with a 5-0 run to extend the lead. DePetrillo and Leary led Iona down the stretch with a 5-1 closing run to bring the score to 22-13 in favor of the Red Foxes at halftime.
 
The Red Foxes continued to hold serve in the second half in the second half, outscoring Iona 41-30 in the final two quarters to take the victory. DePetrillo led the Gaels with nine second half points while Fajardo and rookie Adrianna Gonzalez added six and five points respectively. 

IONA PERFORMERS

  • DePetrillo posted her third double-digit scoring effort of the season. She totaled 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field. She also led the team with two assists and two steals. Her six boards set a new career high.
  • Fajardo finished the game with nine points to go with three rebounds.
  • Leary led the Gaels in rebounding for the 10th time this season with a team-high seven rebounds.

THE OPPONENT

  • Marist had three scorers in double figures led by a 14-point, eight rebound effort from Lexie Tarul.
  • Danielle Williamsen recorded 12 points for the Red Foxes.
  • Jackie Piddock chipped in 10 points and a team-high four assists.
  • Morgan Lee picked up a game-high 10 rebounds.

TEAM STATS

  • Marist shot 36.1% for the game while Iona was held to a 29.5% clip from the field.
  • A tough three-point shooting afternoon for both teams. Red Foxes had six made threes at a 27.3% clip. Iona was held to just two made three-pointers on a 9.5% three-point percentage.
  • Marist won the rebounding battle with a 47-32 advantage on the glass.
  • Both teams committed 12 turnovers for the game.

The Gaels head down to Rider on Thursday, February 13 for a 6 p.m. tilt at Alumni Gym.
