Iona Baseball Fall in Late Comeback Against Mount

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona Gaels Baseball team fell to Mount St. Mary's in a late game thriller, 9-8. The Gaels scored six of their eight runs within the first three innings, while Mount heated late. Mount was down 6-5 entering the top of the ninth, where they would find four runs on a handful of mistakes from the Gaels. Iona would show a glimmer of hope as they got the tying run in scoring position, but fell just short. Freshman Sean Stephenson hit his was out of his short slump getting on base three times, two hits and a walk, while driving in two runs. Senior Eric Gialloreto allowed four runs, three earned, over six innings.

Game Summary

Both Iona and Mount were threatening early. Gialloreto was able to work out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning, while Mount gave up a run early on a single from sophomore Jordan Overton, driving in sophomore Jc Frias who slapped a double down the line. Iona would load the bases, but end up with no runs from it.

The Mountaineers would tie it up in the top of the third inning. Following a lead off triple, Fredo would single him in. The Maroon & Gold would instantly respond, with two outs, graduate student James Kemp worked a walk then junior Anthony Zollo would single advancing him to third. This would bring up Stephenson who would crush a ball deep into left center scoring both runners. After another walk, senior Matt Wessels would single in a run and then junior Nickolas Mora would send a ball down the line scoring two and giving the Gaels a 6-1 lead.

Mount would again strike following a lead off triple. A bad read on a line drive allowed Zeppieri to get all the way to third, before getting driven up by Mendes on a slow grounder into the hole between shortstop and third base.

Again, Mount would cut into the lead in the sixth inning. Three straight singles and an error push them to a 6-4 game and after the inning, Gaels starter Gialloreto would get taken out for junior Tyler Lender. Lender would give up a lead off single in the seventh, but almost work his way out of trouble only giving up one run on a sacrifice fly. Senior Carl Kuentzel would enter for Iona in the eighth inning  and give up a single, before senior Anthony Febo would catch that runner stealing to end the inning.

It would all go south for the Maroon & Gold in the top of the ninth, Kuentzel would hit the lead off hitter, then that runner would advance on a passed ball. He would get a strike out before walking the next two hitters. Rodriguez would smash a double down the line scoring three runs for Mount and giving them their first lead of the game. They would add another run on an error and go up 9-6 going into the bottom half of the ninth inning. Kemp would reach on a strike out wild pitch, then Zollo would single him over to third. Following a pop out, Kemp would score on a balk with Zollo advancing to second. Febo would single him now over to third, before Wessels would sacrifice him in. With two outs, Mora would put a drive on the ball into right field, but not far enough as Mount would walk away with the 9-8 win.

Kuentzel would be tagged with the loss, his fourth of the year. Mount's Josh Halcisk is awarded the win and Max McCrary handed the save.
