Iona Softball Sweeps Home Doubleheader Against Maine

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University softball team used stellar defense and standout pitching to secure a doubleheader sweep over Maine in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon. The Gaels earned a 5-3 victory in game one over the Black Bears at Donald E. Walsh Field before a 1-0 shutout in the second game of the twin bill.

Junior Hailey Guerrrero launched her seventh home run of the season to start the scoring in game one. Junior Brianna Fischer and sophomore Madison Campeau drove in a pair of runs each in game one. Sophomore Allison Hoppe fanned a career-high seven batters in the complete game one win. Senior Samantha Rieb dominated the circle in game two, giving up just one hit with a career-high 10 strikeouts.

GAME ONE: IONA 5, MAINE 3

Guerrero kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the first inning by lifting the sixth pitch of the at bat over the left field wall for the 1-0 lead. Iona continued to threaten with the bases loaded but Maine escaped trouble with an inning ending strikeout.

The Gaels looked to add to their tally in the second as Fischer picked up a one-out walk before junior Hannah Werth singled to third base. Both would advance on a double steal before Guerrero walked the bases loaded. The Black Bears evaded trouble once more with an inning ending double play. Both offenses would remain quiet from there as Hoppe and Alysen Rieth for Maine settled in from there.

Iona got going once again in the fifth frame as senior Brianna Bailey led off the inning with a double to the right field walk. After a sacrifice bunt, rookie Sara Piña and senior Kenadie Gonzalez both worked walks to load the bases. Campeau stepped to the dish and lined the first pitch up the middle to drive in two runs. A ground out advanced both runners to scoring position. Fischer then cleared the bases with a two-run two-out single to right center for the 5-0 advantage.

Hoppe was dealing through the first six frames, surrendering just two walks and striking out seven batters. She yielded her first hit of the game with a lead off base knock in the seventh. Maine got its first run in the seventh before a two-run two-out single broke brought the deficit to two. Hoppe was able to get a fly out to left field to secure the game one win.

GAME TWO: IONA 1, MAINE 0

Iona looked to carry momentum early into game two as Guerrero worked a four pitch walk with one out in the bottom of the first. Bailey followed with a double to the right field fence. The Black Bears were able to secure a line out and groundout to end the frame.

Pitching dominated the rest of the next several innings as Rieb fanned five batters and issued just two walks through the first four innings. Madison Simmerman surrendered just two Iona hits through the first three frames.

The Gaels got rolling in the fourth as junior Brooke Acker led off the inning with a single to right field. Sophomore Leah Palmer came in to pinch hit and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. An error than gave Iona runners at the corners with one out. Campeau drove in the lone run of the game on an RBI ground out for the 1-0 lead. Maine threatened in the next half inning with two runners on and two outs, but the Gaels got a slick fielding play from Piña at third for the final out of the inning.

Rieb continued to dominate in the circle, striking out the side in the sixth inning for the Maroon & Gold. Iona took its one run advantage into the seventh, quickly securing the first two outs. An eight-pitch walk followed for Maine. The Black Bears then got the team's first hit of game two with a base knock to left field. With two runners on, Rieb sealed the sweep with her 10th and final strikeout of the game.
