Iona MBB Runs Away From Canisius, 82-52

BUFFALO, NY - The Iona University men's basketball team trailed for just 26 seconds in an 82-52 win over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Koessler Center. Rookie guard Adam Njie Jr. scored 17 of his career-best 26 points in the second half to lead the Gaels to a sweep of their annual Western New York trip.

THE RUNDOWN

Canisius drew first blood and held their only lead of the contest with a three-pointer on its first possession. Junior Luke Jungers answered with a three-pointer of his own at 18:47 and the Gaels would not trail the rest of the way. The final tie score came at 5-5. Iona scored six straight and led by at least four points the rest of the way. The Maroon & Gold held a 14 point halftime advantage following back-to-back steals and fast break layups by senior Dejour Reaves and Njie to end the frame.
 
A 13-0 run in the second half helped Iona build a 68-41 advantage with 6:52 to play. The Gaels led by as many as 31 in the game before a Griffs free throw rounded out the final margin.

IONA PERFORMERS

  • Njie's career-high 26-point effort came on 11-of-16 shooting including 2-of-4 from distance and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. He posted three rebounds, two assists and three steals.
  • Junior Yaphet Moundi posted 15 points, shooting 7-for-10 from the field while adding six rebounds.
  • Sophomore Comeh Emuobor had 10 points, four rebounds and two assists.
  • Freshman Justin Menard recorded eight points and four assists without a turnover.
  • Reaves added six points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal and was +26 in 28 minutes on the floor.
  • Senior Clarence Rupert matched Moundi with a team-best six boards.

THE OPPONENT

  • Tana Kopa had 15 points to lead the Griffs, shooting 5-for-10 from the field with four three pointers.
  • Gianni Thompson added 15 points while the MAAC's leading scorer Paul McMillan was held to 12.
  • Kopa, McMillan and Dylan Godfrey had four rebounds apiece to lead the home team.
  • Anthony Benard had four assists.

TEAM STATS

  • Iona out shot Canisius 53.3%-37.0% and led 35-19 in field goals made.
  • The Maroon & Gold held a 41-22 advantage on the boards and 12-8 on the offensive glass with a 17-9 lead in second chance points.
  • The Gaels had 17 assists and 11 turnovers while Canisius posted eight assists and 12 giveaways. The visitors led 17-8 in points off turnovers.
