NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Despite another slow start for the Gaels offense they fired on all cylinders once they saw the first one go in, defeating Marist 17-12. Iona improves to 2-0 in MAAC play.
Ava Giugliano started for the second game in a row in net, making 17 saves.
Marist opened the game with a two nothing lead and ended the first quarter with a one goal lead. Over the second and third quarter the Gaels out scored Marist 13-5. Both teams combined for 42 fouls.
Ava's 17 saves is the fifth highest amount of saves in a game in program history, she also added three ground balls. Iona offense was led by nine Gaels with
Kira Varada leading the way with four goals and three assists for her second seven point game in a row.
Maliya Haddock and
Kacie Scarduzio both netted hat tricks.
Lindsey Grove netted two of her own.
The other goals came from
Laine Walterson,
Calen Norton,
Sabrina Faulkner,
Sydney Grassi, and
Kate Krueger. That's 17 goals on 37 shots, with 30 on goal. The Maroon & Gold went 6-10 on free position chances, the most free position goals in a game all season.
Kira Varada once again had herself a game adding to her offense with nine draw controls, five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Freshman
Finley Mulhern added three ground balls a new career high, the team collected 20 total. Iona caused six turnovers doubling the Red Foxes total.
Iona will take on the Purple Eagles of Niagara on Wed. April. 2 at home for the noon start. The game will be on ESPN+.
