Iona Baseball Comes Up Short At Quinnipiac, 8-4

HAMDEN, CT — The Iona University baseball team put up a strong fight but came up short against Quinnipiac, dropping the second game of the series, 8-4, on Saturday, March 8th. The Gaels bats were quiet after their hot stretch as only senior Matt Wessels and sophomore Jordan Overton produced multi hit games. Four Gaels got on the board with an RBI apiece, but could not keep up as Quinnipiac continues to produce late inning runs, scoring four runs in their last two innings at the plate.

Game Summary

The Gaels held the Bobcats scoreless through the first two innings before Quinnipiac broke through in the third, scoring four runs. Despite the early deficit, Iona responded immediately in the fourth inning, plating two runs to cut the lead in half. Sophomore Jc Frias kicked the inning off with a hit by pitch, followed by Overton slapping a double to left center field pushing him to third. Junior Braize Mitchell would drive in Frias with a sacrifice fly and senior Carson Cahoy would advance Overton in the next at bat. With two outs in the inning, Wessels would single in Overton cutting the lead in half to 4-2. Strong pitching kept the Gaels in the game as they held Quinnipiac off the board for three innings.

Iona continued to chip away, adding another run in the seventh to make it a 4-3 ballgame, in the top of the seventh. Wessels again would get on base with a single and advance to third on a walk and fielder's choice. Graduate student James Kemp would get the RBI on a two out single up the middle. However, Quinnipiac answered with a three-run bottom half of the inning, extending their lead to 7-3. The Bobcats added a solo home run in the eighth, but the Gaels showed their resilience in the ninth, pushing across one more run before ultimately falling 8-4.

Senior Andrelys Payamps would be handed the loss and Quinnipiac's Poncini awarded the win.
