NEW BRITIAN, CT - The Iona women's lacrosse team picked up their first win of the season in dominating fashion with a 19-1 win over Central Connecticut.
Lauren Sweeney picked up the win, as all three goalies for Iona played minutes.
Kacie Scarduzio led the team with four goals and two assists for a team high six points.
Maliya Haddock also netted a hat trick in the win.
Kira Varada,
Calen Norton,
Natasha Newport, and
Laine Walterson all scored two goals each,
Sydney Grassi, along with freshman
Meghann Jones,
Brianna Reynolds, and
Lauren Feeney all netted one goal apiece.
Iona assisted on seven of the 19 goals with freshman
Abby Axe recording two for her first two collegiate points. Iona shot 50 times, three shy of the program record for shots in a game. The Gaels double the opponents in ground balls with
Amelia Kelley leading the way with three of the teams 22.
Lauren Sweeney start and played the first half making two saves and allowing the lone goal.
Ava Giugliano, and
Sofia Votto combined for three saves in the second half and shutting the hosts out. Iona controlled the draw with 16
Calen Norton and
Kira Varada combined for seven.
Varada led the team with three caused turnovers and Carly Lithincum and Haddock each caused two. Iona improves to 1-5 on the season and will take on one more non-conference foe before MAAC play.
Iona plays again next Saturday Mar. 15 as they travel to Boulder, CO to take on the Buffaloes of Colorado, game is scheduled for a 2 pm ET start.
