WLAX Falls to Siena On Senior Day, 13-10

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona Women's lacrosse program attempted a comeback getting with in two goals with five minutes left to play but came up just short as they fell 13-10 to Siena on Senior Day. That was the Gaels first MAAC lost of the season falling to 5-1 in conference and in a three way tie for first place with Mount St. Mary's & Fairfield. 

Prior today's game the Gaels honored their nine seniors, Kira Varada, Kate Krueger, Kacie Scarduzio, Carly Linthicum, Olivia Tomes, Lana Ranghelli, Sofia Votto, Laine Walterson, and Alyssa Castellano

Iona's offense was led by Calen Norton, Scarduzio and Varada as all three netted hat tricks, Krueger scored the lone remaining Iona goal. Iona assisted on six of the 10 goals with the Ossining native Scarduzio recording three for a team high six points. Iona shot efficiently today with 22 of the 26 shots on goal. Varada had a team high 10 shots.

Sofia Votto got the start in net for Iona her 15 minutes of play the senior made one save and gave up three goals. Ava Giugliano took over at the start of the second the sophomore let in 10 siena goal and made five saves, she also picked up two ground balls, as she picked up her first MAAC loss of the season. 

As a team the Gaels grabbed 15 ground balls and caused 13 turnovers both more than the Saints, but the opposition double the Maroon & Gold in draw controls 18-9. The Gaels are the 15th best team in the country when it comes to causing turnovers they average 10.58 per game. 

Varada was a menace all game as she was all over the field with seven ground balls, five caused turnovers, and three draw controls. That is her third game of the season with at least five ground balls, five caused turnovers, and three draw controls. Varada is currently fourth in the nation with 3.17 caused turnovers per game. 

Iona will host Mount St. Mary's in a battle of 5-1 teams for the Maroon & Gold's final home regular season game on April. 16th for a noon start.
