Iona Baseball Swept By Fairfield

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University Baseball team was swept by Fairfield over the weekend. The series finale on Sunday saw Iona strand another 12 runners on base, continuing the weekend trend of failing to find the big hit. Four Gaels contributed multi hit games though, senior Matt Wessels, juniors Damian Rodriguez and Anthony Zollo, and freshman Sean Stephenson. Out of the pen, junior Sean Davis had another great outing going three innings only allowing one hit.

Game Summary

After a quick top of the first, the Gaels looked ready after Rodriguez lead off with a single, but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double. The second inning was much the same for both sides stranding runners. The third saw the most action of the game as Fairfield would drop four runs on Iona with a two run home run, followed by three hits. Sophomore Brendan Callanan would be removed for senior Carl Kuentzel and he would strikeout the nine hole hitter to strand bases loaded. Iona would strand two more runners in the third inning, before a quick fourth inning.

Kuentzel would stay in for the fifth and work around a lead off home run to not allow anymore damage. In the sixth, Davis would enter and work around a lead off double to strand the runner at third. After a 1-2-3 seventh inning, Stephenson would knock a one out single, before advancing to third on a two out Wessels double. Rodriguez would swing first pitch and ground out to the pitcher, seeing the Gaels build up on their total of runners left on base. The Gaels would load the bases in the bottom of the eighth and Stephenson would drive in one run to bring it close, but again the Maroon & Gold missed out on a big hit.

Senior Matt Zguro would take the ninth and allow an unearned run, but grab two strikeouts in the inning. Callanan was given the loss and Fairfield;s Baker earned his fifth win of the season.
