NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University Baseball team lost to Siena after a late inning comeback. The Gaels led 2-1 going into the 8th inning and after moving to the bullpen, the lead fell in the inning as Siena took a 3-2 lead going into the ninth. Following a few hits and walks, the Saints extend their lead to 4-2 before an error gave them a 6-2 lead and left Iona in a massive hole unable to mount a comeback in the bottom of the ninth.
Game Summary
The Gaels started off ice cold, getting no hit for the first five innings of the game. Luckily, senior Eric Gialloreto kept Iona in the game with a powerful seven innings only giving up two runs with four strikeouts.
The first runs of the game were scored in the sixth inning, Siena had a lead off single, but were cut down trying to extend it to a double by senior Matt Wessels. A hit by pitch followed by two back-to-back two out singles saw the Saints take a 1-0 lead. Senior Anthony Febo broke the no hitter with a lead off single in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, junior Damian Rodriguez drew a walk then sophomore Jc Frias singled through the left side. Sophomore Jordan Overton flew out to center but not far enough to drive in a run. Graduate student James Kemp continued to dominate driving in two runs on a single to center. Freshman Sean Stephenson singled to right, but Frias was thrown out at the plate.
After a quick seventh inning for both sides, Gialloreto would be pulled after a lead off double. Junior Sean Davis entered and got a ground out to start the inning, but the runner on second would advance. The next batter would single and score the tying run at two all. With two outs in the inning, two straight singles would put Siena back in front by one at 3-2. The Gaels would strand two runners in scoring position in the 8th inning before sending out senior Carl Kuentzel to pitch the ninth. Kuentzel walked the lead off hitter before a sacrifice bunt advanced the runner. Following an intentional walk, the next hitter smashed a ground rule double down the right field line to go up 4-2. With two outs in the inning and bases loaded, a ground ball to graduate student Jayson Gonzalez took a tough bounce and got by him scoring two runs, but would throw out a runner at third ending the inning, but the damage was done at 6-2. The Gaels would ground out to the shortstop three straight times in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.
Davis was given the loss for Iona and Siena's Tyler Sausville was handed the win.
