NORTH ANDOVER, MA - The Iona women's lacrosse program extended their win streak to four games and improved to 4-0 in MAAC play with a solid win over Merrimack, 17-9. The Gaels have won five of their last six games.Â
Despite trailing 4-2 in the first quarter, the Gaels closed out the final four minutes with four straight goals. Iona went on a another three goal run to close out the second, entering halftime break up 10-6. Iona went on their biggest run of the game spanning over the third and into the fourth, they scored six straight goals jumping out to a nine goal.Â
Iona's offense was led by
Kacie Scarduzio,
Kira Varada, and
Maliya Haddock who combined for 11 of the 17 goals. Kacie had a team high seven points with three assist to go along with her four goals.
Laine Walterson netted two goals, while freshman
Haley Lauer,
Calen Norton,
Natasha Newport, and senior
Alyssa Castellano all score one each. Iona outshot Merrimack by 12 shots, 34-22, the Gaels assisted on nine goals, and went a perfect 3-for-3 on free position chances.Â
Sophomore
Ava Giugliano made eight saves in the 60 minutes, she added two ground balls in her fourth win of the season. Iona caused 12 warrior turnovers, Varada led with a game high four, Scarduzio and
Amelia Kelley record two apiece. The Maroon & Gold picked up 13 ground balls as a team.Â
