NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona University Baseball team took a second win in their series against Saint Peter's Friday night.
gave the Gaels a strong start from the hill, earning his fourth win of the season and striking out four batters. Offensively, the Gaels were boosted by a three-run third inning and five-run seventh on the way to their second seven-point win in a row over the peacocks, 9-2. Â
Game Summary
Both clubs remained scoreless through three innings before a Jordan Overton RBI Single to center field knocked in Damian Rodriguez for the Maroon & Gold's opening tally. Advancing to second after Jimmy Kemp drew a walk, Overton went on to score off a Jayson Gonzalez single. The Gaels completed their three-run third inning with Kemp reaching home off a J.C. Frias sacrifice fly. Â
Andrelys Payamps continued to own the mound, striking out four before allowing two runs in the fifth. Payamps was replaced by Joey Kasper in the sixth inning, who posted six straight outs with three strikeouts through two innings. Up one score in the bottom of the seventh, the Maroon & Gold put the game to bed with an outburst of five runs. Down two outs, Damian Rodriguez rocketed a three-RBI double down the left field line, highlighting an impressive inning. Sean Davis jumped into action and kept the visitors scoreless in the eight before Iona tallied one more run as Jimmy Kemp ripped a home run over the left center wall. Â
Matt Zguro took the hill for the ninth, and with a strikeout looking sealed the Gaels' series victory over the Peacocks. Â
