BALTIMORE, MD — The Iona University women's soccer team concluded its road swing on Sunday afternoon with a 5-0 setback to University of Baltimore County. The Retrievers pulled away with a three-goal second half to take the matchup over the Gaels, who won the meeting between both teams last season at Mazzella Field.
GAME SUMMARY
Iona had the first breakaway chance of the game in the 6

Krystal Haertter who fired a right footed shot that was denied by a diving stop.
UMBC would take the early lead in the 22
nd minute, as cross sent in from the right side was deflected off the Gaels defense and into the back of the net to give the home team a 1-0 lead. With momentum on their side, the Retrievers doubled up just four minutes later as a booming free kick by Payton Schenning from 30-yards out that bounced through the wall and into the back of the net.

The Maroon & Gold held a 7-3 advantage on shots in the first half against the Retrievers
Iona had a point-blank opportunity in the 53
rd minute on a cross by Jackson to sophomore
Dolene Smith at the doorstep but that was kick saved away by new keeper Kalli Williams.
From there it was all UMBC, scoring goals in the 55
th minute and 62
nd minute before capping the scoring with a penalty kick goal in the 84
th minute to bring the final to 5-0.
Iona posted a season-high 10 shot attempts with seven different Gaels attempting a shot on goal. Junior Isabella Giovanni made her first appearance in goal for Iona, playing the final 12 minutes and recording her first career save.
