Iona WSOC Plays Wagner to a Scoreless Draw

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University women's soccer team returned home to Mazzella Field and battled Wagner to scoreless draw on Sunday afternoon. It is the second straight draw between the Gaels and Seahawks who have faced off in each of the last five seasons.
 
Junior goalkeeper Savannah Rogers made one save in her second shutout of the season. Seahawks keeper Shae McGinty recorded five stops for the opposition. The Maroon & Gold totaled 17 shot attempts for the game with senior Krystal Haertter leading with four shots.

GAME SUMMARY

Iona dictated the tempo in the opening half, recording a 9-1 margin on shots. The Gaels also attempted 10 corner kicks while holding Wagner to three in the first 45 minutes of action.
 
A flurry of action happened 30 minutes into the action with three shots on goal in a four-minute stretch that included three corner kick opportunities. Rookie Ava Barker along with sophomore Dolene Smith fired in shots on goal that were denied by McGinty.
 
The Seahawks looked to attack early on the restart with a chance in the 53rd minute but Rogers was there to make her lone save of the game. From there Iona dictated the pace with a 7-3 margin on shot attempts in the final 37 minutes of action but the Seahawks defense applied consistent pressure to push attempts offline.

TEAM STATS

  • Iona led with a season-high 17 shot attempts while holding Wagner to an opponent-low five shots. The Gaels only had five shot attempts on goal and held the Seahawks to one.
  • The 13 corner kicks from the Maroon & Gold were a season best.
  • It was the first game this season without a card for either side. It was a physical battle at Mazzella Field with 14 of the 22 fouls called coming in the second half.

The Gaels are back on the road for the nex three contests as the schedule turns to September. First up is a trip to Lafayette on Wednesday, September 3 for a 7 p.m. matchup at Gummeson Grounds.
