NORTH ANDOVER, MA — The Iona University women's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision on Saturday afternoon at Merrimack. The Gaels made the trip to Martone-Mejail Field for the first time were cut the first half deficit to one before a late charge from the Warriors to take the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tilt.

Dolene Smith scored her second goal of the season in the 51
st minute for the Maroon & Gold. First-year
Mya Jackson tallied her first collegiate assist on the play with setup pass for Smith.
GAME SUMMARY
The Warriors offense jumped early, taking a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of play as Isabella Keogh sent in a hard cross down the left side that banked off an Iona defender off the crossbar and into the back of the net.
Iona looked to level the score in the 20
th minute with a lead pass sent to Smith on the left side for a chip shot past Warriors goalkeeper Kaitlyn Brewi, but the play was ruled offside.
Merrimack doubled up its lead in the 26
th minute with a breakaway chance that saw Keough fire a shot from just outside the 18-yard box to the lower left corner past a diving reach of sophomore
Kayla Kalbaugh.
The Warriors held a 8-5 advantage on shots for the first half, Kalbaugh made three saves in the opening stanza for the Gaels.
Iona pushed the tempo out of the halftime intermission working a swift breakaway chance in the 51
st minute. Smith and Jackson worked a give and go attack into the box. Jackson found Smith on the right side to bury the shot towards the back left corner of the net to make it a 2-1 game.
The Warriors responded five minutes later as Kylie Fuller fired a high arching shot to the upper right 90 to push the lead back to two. Merrimack continued to hold the pace as the second half wore on, capping the scoring in the 69
th minute on another high shot from Maddie Eddy to bring the final score to 4-1.
TEAM STATS
- Merrimack held a 13-8 margin for shot attempts and a 9-3 advantage for shots on goal.
- Iona attempted four corner kicks while the Warriors only attempted one second half corner kick.
- There were only 13 fouls called in the contest.
