NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona University men's basketball team withstood a late charge from Siena to earn a 75-72 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory Friday night at the Hynes Center. CJ Anthony recorded an 11-point, 13-assist double-double to lead the Maroon and Gold.
THE RUNDOWN
Iona claimed the first multi-possession lead of the night 8:20 into the contest when junior
Denver Anglin knocked down a step-back three to make it 18-14. Siena answered with nine straight points over a two-minute span to take a 25-20 lead with 8:20 remaining. The momentum quickly swung back to the Gaels, who rattled off 15 consecutive points over the next three and a half minutes to build a double-digit advantage. Iona shot 5-for-6 during the run, connecting on three three-pointers including two from Harris and one from junior
Kosy Akametu, and led 35-25 at the 4:50 mark. Siena trimmed the margin to five heading into the break.

The second half featured dramatic runs by both teams. Iona created separation with a 14-3 surge over 4:07 to extend the lead to 58-46 with 13:02 remaining. Siena responded with its own 14-3 run over the next 3:50, closing within one at 61-60 with just under nine minutes to play. The Saints briefly took the lead on back-to-back three-pointers at the 7:42 and 7:24 marks to go ahead 66-64.
Three minutes later, Iona regained control by scoring the game's next five points. Siena went 0-for-5 from the field during the stretch while graduates
Lamin Sabally and
Keshawn Williams each delivered field goals for the Gaels. Justice Shoats capped a four-point spurt for Siena to give the visitors a 72-71 lead with 1:47 remaining.

Anthony answered moments later, slicing through the Siena press for a layup with 91 seconds on the clock to put Iona back in front. Following a defensive stop, Williams drilled a fadeaway baseline jumper with 57 seconds remaining to extend the lead to three. The Gaels then came up with defensive stops on Siena's final two possessions to close out the victory.
IONA PERFORMERS
- Harris finished with 25 points, connecting on 6-of-12 from beyond the arc. It marked his third game this season with six three-pointers and his second straight such performance at the Hynes Center dating back to the Bryan game on Dec. 13. He also contributed three rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block.
- Anthony recorded his first collegiate double-double with 11 points and a career-high 13 assists. He added five rebounds, two steals, and a block.
- Williams scored 11 points, including six of the Gaels' final eight over the last 4:10. He shot 5-for-6 from the field and grabbed four rebounds.
- Sabally finished with 10 points to go along with four rebounds, three assists, a steal, and a block.
- Rookie Alliou Fall tallied seven points and seven rebounds and posted a plus-minus of plus 12 in his fifth start of the season.
- Anglin added seven points, while Akametu chipped in five points and six rebounds.
THE OPPONENT
- Gavin Doty led all scorers with 31 points, the highest total by an Iona opponent this season. He shot 10-for-23 from the field with three three-pointers and added 12 rebounds, five steals, and two assists.
- Francis Folefac recorded 18 points along with two rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks.
- Shoats finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
TEAM STATS
- Iona shot 50.0 percent from the field compared to 40.9 percent for Siena and held a 39.3 percent to 33.3 percent edge from three-point range. The Gaels knocked down 11 three-pointers, reaching double figures for the eighth time in 15 games this season and improving to 7-1 in those contests.
- The Gaels held a 36-31 rebounding advantage but trailed 9-6 on the offensive glass and 9-1 in second-chance points.
- Iona finished with 22 assists and 16 turnovers, while Siena recorded 17 assists and 12 turnovers. The Saints also held a 20-5 edge in points off turnovers.
