Iona MBB Falls at Marist

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Iona University men's basketball team suffered an 83-38 setback at Marist in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at McCann Arena. Plagued by a season-high 24 turnovers, the Maroon and Gold turned in their lowest offensive output of the season. Graduate CJ Anthony led Iona with 11 points, while junior Denver Anglin added eight in the defeat.

THE RUNDOWN

Marist seized the lead for good following an Iona turnover with 14:34 remaining in the first half, marking the final of three lead changes in the opening five and a half minutes. The Red Foxes steadily pulled away and carried a 42-22 advantage into the locker room. Iona committed 14 turnovers in the opening frame, which Marist converted into a 9-0 scoring edge.

IONA PERFORMERS

  • Anthony finished with a team-high 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting and added two rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • Anglin chipped in eight points on 4-for-11 shooting from the field.
  • Junior Kosy Akametu contributed seven points.
  • Graduate Luke Jungers and Lamin Sabally led the Gaels on the glass with five rebounds each.

THE OPPONENT

  • Rhyjon Blackwell scored a game-high 17 points and Elijah Lewis added 14 as Marist placed four players in double figures. Both Blackwell and Lewis recorded four rebounds and two assists, with Lewis also coming away with four steals.
  • Myles Parker finished with 11 points, while Jason Schofield added 10.
  • Jadin Collins-Roberts pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, and former Gael Justin Menard dished out five assists.

TEAM STATISTICS

  • Marist shot 45.6 percent from the field, while Iona finished at 31.8 percent for the game. The Gaels struggled in the second half, shooting 4-for-21, and connected on just 1-of-14 attempts from three-point range overall.
  • The Red Foxes held a 42-32 edge on the boards.
  • Iona recorded six assists against 24 turnovers, while Marist totaled 23 assists and committed only six turnovers.

UP NEXT

The Gaels return to New Rochelle next weekend for a pair of home contests at the Hynes Center, welcoming Niagara on Friday, Jan. 9, followed by Canisius on Sunday, Jan. 11.
