Iona MSOC Knocks Off League-Leading Fairfield on Homecoming Weekend

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona University men's soccer team earned a pivotal Metro Conference victory on Homecoming Weekend, defeating league-leading Fairfield, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Mazzella Field. The Gaels snapped the Stags' 10-match unbeaten streak behind a 51st-minute goal from rookie Ignacio Manzanares.

Manzanares netted his team-leading fifth goal of the season, while sophomore Ricardo Vivo Calderon registered his team-high fourth assist on the game-winner. Reigning Metro Rookie of the Week Adriano Sofio anchored the Iona defense with a career-high eight saves, recording his third consecutive shutout.

THE RUNDOWN

Fairfield's league-leading offense applied pressure early, registering three shots in the opening 15 minutes as Sofio made two saves to keep the Stags off the scoreboard.

The Gaels' first look on goal came in the 19th minute as a shot from senior Jaime Roman Jr. was turned aside by Fairfield goalkeeper Evan Chomow. Iona followed with two more shots in the opening half, but both attempts missed the target.

Sofio added another stop in the 39th minute as the two sides entered halftime deadlocked at 0-0.

Fairfield continued to apply pressure early in the second half, earning a free kick just inside Iona's defensive half. The Gaels cleared the ensuing opportunity toward midfield, where Vivo Calderon collected the ball and sparked a counterattack.

Vivo Calderon carried the ball 35 yards upfield before finding a sprinting Manzanares on the left side. The rookie collected the pass 10 yards from goal and fired a left-footed shot into the far corner to give Iona a 1-0 advantage in the 51st minute.

Sofio continued to stand tall in goal, making four saves over the next 23 minutes to preserve the narrow lead.

Fairfield gained a man advantage with six minutes remaining after a video review resulted in a red card against Iona. Despite playing a man down, the Gaels' defensive unit held firm, forcing the Stags' final two attempts off target, including a header off a corner kick in the final minute, to secure the shutout victory.
